 Moving Tips

Get things in Order

Your move will be easier and smoother if you do a good job of pre-planning. Here are tips to help you get started.

* Create a complete inventory of what you will be moving to your new house.
* Don't forget to photograph or videotape your belongings, also note of the serial numbers on your electronic equipment.
* Notify friends and family of your address change.
*
Don't be afraid to ask for help:
If you never moved before and not sure what you need or what the move is going to be like. Get someone who has moved before.

Packing Essentials

  • Sturdy boxes
  • Bubble wrap, Packing peanuts
  • Packing tape
  • Scissors or tools to open up boxes
  • Several permanent markers and/or colored sticker labels
  • Old blankets or sheets for the corners of furniture.

Kitchen Items

Breakables:

  • Use bubble wrap or newsprint
  • Bubble wrap between each bowl or plate
  • Protect inside of top bowl with crumpled paper or newsprint
  • Heavier items go on the bottom of the box

Nonbreakables:

  • Be sure to wrap everything before placing in box
  • Use cell packs to keep delicate items apart
  • Again, heavier items in the bottom of the box

The Essentials
Make a box of essentials that will be packed last and opened first. This box may include:

  • Tools such as lightbulbs, batteries, flashlight, tape measure, and screwdrivers
  • Bathroom items such as hand towels, soap, toilet paper, shampoo, and shower curtain
  • Kitchen items such as paper towels, cups, and plates; plastic utensils; dish detergent; a sponge; and trash bags

Lawn Equipment

Gas-powered:

  • Drain all harmful liquids -oil and gas from lawn mowers, weed whackers and chain saws
  • Put covers on chain saws and other sharp tools
  • Clearly mark attachments and pack together

Tools:

  • Secure all tools that are the same length together
  • Keep small tools in the toolbox.
  • Remember to protect sharp edges before packing
  • Label carefully so no one gets hurt during unpacking

Safety Tip: A very important reminder is to carefully dispose of the gasoline and oil from your lawnmower and other machinery, as well as any flammable or poisonous household products. Remember not to pack rags that are soiled with fuel. They should be properly disposed of to avoid spontaneous combustion.

Tricky Things
  • Small mirrors should be carefully wrapped and packed in boxes. Cardboard should be used to cover large paintings, artwork, or wall mirrors. When possible.
  • Outdoor furniture may be too bulky or heavy to move in one piece, you may need to disassemble it. If so, be sure to place the nuts and bolts in a plastic bag and attach it to the furniture.
  • Carpets and rugs should be rolled up and secured with tape or rope.
  • Wrapping sharp edges on any tools or attachments will help prevent injury. Power tools should be packed with plenty of cushioning. Be sure to tie or tape your tool chests securely closed.
  • Personal Computers and Computer Peripheral Devices (printers, external drives, etc). If you have the original box and packing material it came in, use it!
